Celebrating Safer Internet Day in Kakamega County, Kenya – Empowering A Generation of Digital Citizens

Eveminet honoured the global Safer Internet Day (SID) celebrations 2025 in Kakamega county in Kenya, becoming a hub of digital empowerment and online safety awareness. Prior to these global celebrations from February 8th to 11th, 2025, we conducted a series of impactful events, including a Training of Trainers (ToT) session and an interactive Safer Internet Day celebration at Friends  Lukalu Secondary School.

Safer Internet Day at Friends Lukalu Secondary School, Inspiring the Next Generation

On February 11th, 2025, the celebrations culminated in a vibrant Safer Internet Day event themed “Together For A Better Internet” at Friends Lukalu Secondary School. A total of 378 students participated in an interactive session focused on two critical topics:

  1. Cyberbullying Awareness and Mitigation
  2. Digital footprints and Identity

The event was structured into three parts:

  1. A session led by one of the newly trained ToT trainers Elijah Mbote from Uasin Gishu County, who applied his skills in a real-world setting.
  2. Two sessions facilitated by experienced trainers, who provided deeper insights and real-life case studies.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Cyberbullying Awareness, Students learned about the different forms of cyberbullying, its impact, and how to seek help. We encouraged them to become “up-standers” rather than bystanders, taking a stand against online harassment.
  • Digital Footprints, through hands-on activities, the students explored how their online actions create and leave a digital footprint and why it is crucial to manage their online presence responsibly.

The sessions were met with enthusiasm, as students actively participated in discussions and shared their experiences. Many expressed that they had gained new perspectives on how their online activities could affect their future opportunities and personal security.

Impact and Moving Forward

Safer Internet Day activities were instrumental in building capacity for digital literacy and online safety awareness and digital wellbeing. The participants are now confident and well-equipped to extend their knowledge to a broader audience, cultivating a more informed and responsible digital community.

The success of the  Friends Lukalu Secondary School event highlighted the importance of ongoing education and advocacy in promoting a safer and more inclusive internet. Moving forward, continuous support and follow-up training will be essential to ensure these initiatives have a lasting impact.

Recommendations for Future Initiatives

  1. Follow-Up Training by conducting periodic refresher sessions to reinforce learning and address emerging online safety threats and concerns.
  2. Encourage and support community outreach through out trained Scouts to host local awareness sessions in schools and community centers.
  3. Resource Development by provide additional materials such as guides, videos, and case studies to enhance training effectiveness.
  4. Monitoring & Evaluation behavioural changes by track the impact of the training through participant feedback and engagement metrics.

The Safer Internet Day celebrations in Kakamega were a testament to the power of education and collaboration in creating a safer digital world. We are making significant strides toward a more secure and inclusive internet for all in addition to our digital safety initiative – #SaferTogether in partnership with TikTok.

We continue to work together to ensure that every digital interaction is safe, positive, and empowering for all children.
