Status: Still Online, Still Surviving

Because you should be dodging trolls – not personal or financial ruin.

Once Upon a Scroll…

There you are, just minding your own business, double-tapping a cute cat video and reacting to a friend’s throwback pic with fire emojis. Next thing you know, your account is hacked, your number is being used to request loans, and someone’s grandma is texting you about a giveaway you never posted.
Welcome to the jungle.
Today’s social media platforms are not just places to vibe, they are virtual megaphones, shopping malls, confession booths, and, unfortunately, breeding grounds for scammers, cyberbullies, and identity thieves.

Social Media is a Vibe… Until It is Not

We love to post. Food, fits, feelings. Birthdays, bae, and bank statements (please stop this one). But every time you overshare, there is someone screenshotting, saving, or scheming.
Social media safety is not just about “not being dramatic.” It’s about digital street smarts in a world where everyone has access to everyone.

The Schemes are Scheming

Online risks have evolved beyond “click this suspicious link.” These days, they are emotionally intelligent, grammatically correct, and sometimes flirt better than your actual crush.
Top Risks Lurking Behind the Likes:
  • Fake job offers: “We saw your profile. You would be perfect for this remote role that pays in dollars.” 😐

  • Romance scams: If someone loves you too fast and asks for fare to “come see you,” be serious.

  • Impersonation fraud: That is not your uncle texting, it is a guy in a cyber café with vibes and ambition.

Emotional blackmail: “Send more pics or I will leak what you already sent.” (Don’t. Just don’t!)

Mental Health Is not a Trend

We laugh, we joke, but let us talk real.
  • Comparing your real life to curated highlight reels can crush your confidence.
  • Cyberbullying leaves scars no filter can hide.
  • Constant scrolling messes with your sleep, mood, and attention span.
You should not cry over a comment from someone named “@mr_papi.69,” but that is the reality.

The Safety Playbook (For Real This Time)

For Young People:
  • Lock it down. Privacy settings exist for a reason. Everyone does not need to know your location, new kicks, or favourite hangout.
  • Think before you post. Screenshots are forever. That spicy take might feel good now, until it is in your job interview next year.
  • Trust your gut. If someone gives you weird vibes online, do not wait for proof. Block. Report. Tell someone.

For Adults (Yes, You Too):

  • Pause before posting your children. That birthday pool party? Super cute. But that is data. Creeps are real.
  • Double-check links. Anything that says “congratulations,” “limited offer,” or “bonus cash” deserves a side-eye.
Model behaviour. Your children watch how you handle your own screen time and digital conflicts. Be who you want them to copy.

The 3-Second Safety Check

Before you hit post, ask yourself:
  • Would I say this out loud at a family gathering?
  • Would I want this printed on a banner and hung across Uhuru Highway?
  • Would my boss or parent understand—or disown me?

If the answer is no… maybe skip it.

Stay Sharp, Stay Smart, Stay Private

Social media is not evil. But like a crowded matatu, you need to hold your bag tight, mind your space, and do not talk to everyone who smiles at you.
Your timeline should be a place of joy, not judgment. Connection, not chaos. Sharing, not scamming.
And hey, if you ever need to detox – log out, go outside, touch grass, eat some mutura. The internet will still be here when you get back.
